And another school year begins
I really can't believe it, 20 years of school openings. 20 years and many different positons with different perspectives. My first position in education was as a 1:1 teaching aide for a high school student with cerebral palsy. After graduating a year late from college due to an extended study aborad (worth it!) I went straight to grad school but needed a job. I looked in the Penny Saver and found an ad for teaching aides at a nearby high school. I got the job and started immediately walking with him through the halls of the high school and helping in any way possible. I was only with him for a few months before I found a long term substitute leave replacement position in a private school where I taught Spanish then, for opening day 2, I was an assistant teacher in a pre-k classroom in this private school for very wealthy Manhattanites.
Opening day 3 finally was finally in the public schools as a full-time teacher. I didn't realize how little I knew and how far in above my head I was.
