English Spelling Application
This is the English version of my French Dictée app. My daughter liked the French one so much that I built the same thing for her weekly English spelling words, again working with Claude Code.
How to use the application
On an iPhone or iPad, open it in Safari and choose Share → "Add to Home Screen". On Android, open it in Chrome and choose "Install app". After that it opens like a regular app and works offline. The Android APK is only for Android, and you will need to allow installing unknown apps; the installation page walks through it.
Adding and Removing Words
The app comes with 8 sample words built in, and you can delete them easily. Press "Manage Words" to type in this week's list, or tap "New week" to replace the old list. You can also take a picture of the list to add the words automatically. Make sure the photo is clear and well lit. You WILL have to check the scanned list and may need to fix a word or two.
Words she misses go on a "Words to review" list and come back until she gets them right a few times.
App Modes
This app has 3 modes:
-
Scrambled Letters - the letters of the word are mixed up, and you drag them into the right order. The word is spoken by your system voice.
-
Pick the Spelling - multiple choice. The voice says the word and you choose the right spelling. The wrong choices are the mistakes kids really make in English, like "freind" or "recieve".
-
Write the Word - the app reads a word, you spell it on paper, then type it in. The app tells you which letters are wrong so you can fix them, and you can see the answer after three tries.
Sharing the list between devices
In "Manage Words" you can make a family code and enter it on another phone or tablet to keep the same list on both. English lists are kept separate from French ones, even if you use the same code in Dictée FR.
For more information, see the installation page.
I hope your child (or you) enjoy!
